Educate America on America’s Farmers

I met Sherry on twitter. She followed me. I followed her. Then checked out her website, CityChicOnAFarm.com. She has a really cute blog where she posts about her life on the farm in Indiana. Seeing that she has some experience blogging, I wanted to find out her thoughts on the topic.
1. Tell a little about you and your operation. city chic on a farm
We run a black angus beef cattle farm with 20 brood cows.  The baby calves that are born here on the farm are sold for freezer beef to local customers.  We purchase 30 feeder pigs at a time and sell freezer pork as well.  We grow hay, field corn, and soybeans too.
2. What made you want to start your blog?

My Farmer does the back breaking work here on the farm and I wanted to contribute in some way with my technology talent.  We are now working together to grow our farm business in hopes for it to solely support the family.  Using Social Media has tripled our freezer meat customer base.

3. What has been the biggest surprise since you started? or something you didn’t expect:

I’m highly surprised at the interest in reading what I have to say as well as the interest in the farm.  Since I came from the city I’m sharing what I learn here on the farm with my readers.  Plus this is a way for our customers to get to know the farm family where the meat is being raised that is served at their tables.

4. Why should farmers blog?

I think farmers should blog to bring awareness, educated others, and let Americans get to know the farmers on a personal level.  City folk are so detached from the process in the city, but if we can create relationships with them then they will see how important it is to buy directly from a farmer as much as possible.  Also to pay attention to the products they buy at the grocery store too.

5. What advice would you give to farmers that have a blog?

Share it all!!  Share your farm chores, share your challenges, share your decision making, share your involvement in the community (4H), etc.  By doing this it educates others and makes them realize being a farmer isn’t just planting, harvesting, and raising animals.  There’s a science to farming just like everything else.  There are also a variety of farmers out there not just grain farmers, vegetable farmers, or cattle farmers.  Let’s educate America on American Farmers!
So do you think farmers should “share it all”?
