Why you should search for yourself

If you searched for your name, would you find yourself?

Recently I gave a presentation to Collegiate FFA’s New Century Farmers about cultivating connections online. (Great bunch of true future farmers from all over the US) While I was preparing the slides on setting up social media profiles, I discovered when I googled myself; I wasn’t there! -Gasp-

Sure all my websites, social media profile links were there. But in the images there was no picture of me. Here is what appeared…no picture of Judi Graff

Where did I go?! One of my profile pictures from one of my bios from any one of my social media channels should show up. Am I right? Darn tootin!

Why did these pictures of my husband and daughter show up in search instead of me?

  1. They have my name in the file name for the picture
  2. The sites they are uploaded to have a high ranking

Every time I uploaded my picture for a profile, the file name attached to each one was “profile”. Because that is what I saved it as. How clever of me. I did that so if I needed the photo I knew to look for “profile” to find it. That was helping in the short term but was doing zilch for search engine optimization.

I wrote about the importance of naming your photos before uploading in my ebook 8 Steps to Update Your Website. I even say to go back and re-upload the photos on your more popular posts. But it never occurred to me to do the same with my profile pics, until now.

How did I fix this?

First I renamed the files for my profile pictures to my name. Then I re-uploaded them to my social media bios.

The images have not changed yet in search. Not sure how long it will take for my photos to show up. I do know that I will have to out rank the sites that are hosting the images that do appear.have you searched for yourself

Help your own SEO

Please learn from my mistake. Go back and rename your profile photos. Then upload them again to your sites and bios.

Be sure to do this for any picture of your logos for your ag business too. It will definitely help your search engine optimization.

Add your name to the file of any photo you use for

  1.  a guest post
  2. events you attend or speak at
  3. photo contests
  4. social media albums (facebook, flickr)

Can you think of any others? Do you need to find yourself too?
